BSL Level 1 and 2 course Qualification schedule and structure:

BSL Level 1 –

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Learners who are new to BSL should cover BSL101 first, as units BSL102 and BSL103 build on this knowledge. Units BSL102 and BSL103 can be taken in any order. However, in order to achieve the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, candidates must pass all units to receive certification.

Unit BSL101 – Introduction to BSL
Unit BSL102 – Conversational BSL
Unit BSL103 – Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life

BSL Level 2 –

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. Learners should be taught a number of regional variations in sign language.

The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

Unit BSL201 – BSL Receptive Skills
Unit BSL202 – BSL Productive Skills
Unit BSL203 – BSL Conversational Skills

In regards to assessments and filmed video examinations, your tutor will be responsible to explain further as to what is expected when undertaking assessments.

At InSignLanguage we aim to run each course over 18 weeks, a candidate can only attend the tutorials for the course that they have registered onto.

In addition, a maximum of 10 students are able to log on to each course, group options are available to do with colleagues or friends and this can be discussed with InSignLanguage staff for further guidance.

Furthermore, if a candidate needs or wants to have additional private tutorials, this can be arranged by booking slots on the calendar, there will be an additional cost of £35 per hour.

BSL Level 1 and 2 Examinations Process

As part of Signature requirements, examinations are mostly filmed video clips which are prepared in accordance with the terms, conditions and procedures set out by Signature, the awarding body.

It is not compulsory to go through with the examination, and if any learners do not wish to sit the exams, don’t worry. InSignLanguage will still issue learners with a Certificate of Completion which will be signed off and given to you by your tutor.

In addition, for learners who want to take the exam, your tutor will assess individual candidate’s competency level before the examination is booked and costs are paid. If learners feel that they would need more time and coaching, this can be discussed with the tutor at a rate.
