Deaf Awareness Advocate

Full job description and requirements:

Location: Remote (working UK time hours) 

Employment Type: Part-Time or Full-Time (flexible options available)

Role Overview: 

We are looking for a passionate and proactive Deaf Awareness Advocate to join our team. In this role, you will champion the importance of Deaf awareness and accessibility in the workplace, fostering understanding and inclusivity among employers and organisations. Through training sessions, consultations, and tailored support, you will help bridge the gap between the Deaf community and businesses seeking to create a more inclusive environment. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Awareness Training: Develop and deliver engaging Deaf awareness training sessions for businesses, ensuring they understand best practices for inclusivity. 

  • Consultation Calls: Conduct consultations with organizations to assess their needs and provide personalized advice on improving accessibility for Deaf employees and customers (training provided). 

  • Advocacy: Advocate for the rights and inclusion of the Deaf community in workplaces and public spaces, promoting accessibility initiatives and tools like InSignLanguage solutions. 

  • Resource Creation: Develop and share resources such as guides, toolkits, and materials to support businesses in their Deaf awareness journey. 

  • Community Engagement: Work closely with the Deaf community to gather insights, share success stories, and highlight the importance of Deaf representation and accessibility. 

  • Support and Guidance: Provide ongoing support to businesses and individuals implementing Deaf awareness practices, ensuring their journey to inclusivity is successful. 

  • Reporting: Maintain records of training sessions, consultations, and feedback, sharing insights with the team to improve outreach efforts. 

 

Must-Have Qualifications: 

  • Deaf and BSL User: Fluency in British Sign Language (BSL) is essential. 

  • Communication Skills: Proficiency in written English with strong communication and presentation abilities. 

  • Right to Work in the UK: Must have the legal right to work in the UK. 

 

Skills and Experience: 

  • Training Experience: Prior experience delivering workshops, training, or similar roles is beneficial but not required. 

  • Knowledge of Accessibility Needs: Understanding of workplace accessibility and the barriers faced by Deaf individuals. 

  • Tech-Savvy: Comfortable using digital platforms for virtual training and resource development. 

  • Self-Organised: Ability to manage your schedule, meet deadlines, and juggle multiple responsibilities. 

  • Friendly and Professional: Capable of building trust and maintaining positive relationships with businesses and community members. 

  • Willingness to Learn: Open to training on InSignLanguage solutions and related accessibility tools. 

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Creative and resourceful in finding solutions to challenges faced by businesses and the Deaf community.
