Attendees from across the NHS all who are Deaf, hard of hearing, allies, and advocates all gathered for the National Deaf and Hard of Hearing NHS Staff Network’s second annual face-to-face event which took place on 26th September from 9:30am at Brighthelm Centre in Brighton.
The atmosphere in the event was warm, inclusive, and full of energy. Conversations in British Sign Language and spoken English intertwined seamlessly, along with the microphones, live captions, and hearing support technology to ensure equitable accessibility for everyone.
The event welcomed the crowd with enthusiasm setting the tone for a day dedicated to inspiration, learning, and connection. It carried not only information but also pride as this was a community that grew stronger, louder, and more confident with each passing year.
A significant highlight of the event was our CEO Liz Hood of InSignLanguage supported by our team member Hannah, delivered a powerful talk on providing accessibility that truly changes lives. Liz’s passion and her personal story resonated well with the audience. Her words didn’t simply highlight barriers, they illuminated solutions. Her talk reinforced the vital role of accessibility services within the NHS. It also marked a milestone moment for InSignLanguage, propelling its visibility and viability within NHS organisations.
The day unfolded with networking breaks, energising conversations, and presentations from other organizations, including RNID, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, and Tinnitus UK. Each contribution provided a richer scope of the diverse support, resources, and advocacy that exist for those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
By the afternoon, the Brighthelm Centre was alive with connections: staff sharing experiences, leaders exchanging ideas, and allies learning how to make real change in their workplaces. More than an event, it was a unified movement one rooted in resilience, community, and hope.
Attendees left with new knowledge, renewed confidence and a shared determination, to build an NHS where accessibility isn’t questioned but expected. InSignLanguage looks forward to continued collaboration with the National Deaf and Hard of Hearing NHS Staff Network to support the involved and promote best practices for accessibility across the health service.
