InSignLanguage Interpreter Assignment

In accordance with ISO 18841:2018 – Interpreting Services: General Requirements and Recommendations 

1. Professional Registration & Compliance

All interpreters contracted by InSignLanguage must: 

  • Maintain current registration with the NRCPD or RBSLI. 

  • Provide up-to-date proof of registration and qualifications. 

  • Submit NRCPD/RBSLI ID and acknowledgement for CRM tracking. 

  • Adhere to:  

    • The NRCPD Code of Conduct or RBSLI Code of Ethics

    • InSignLanguage’s internal compliance, safeguarding, and data protection policies. 

    • Relevant ISO 18841:2018 protocols and ethical standards. 

​2. Assignment Acceptance & Representation

  • Interpreters will receive assignment details including: 

    • Reference number, date/time, client name, interpreting method, location, description, and fee. 

  • Confirmation of receipt is mandatory. 

  • Interpreters must represent InSignLanguage or the named partner (e.g., ASL Services, Microlink) as specified. 

  • If a co-worker is absent and you work solo, notify us immediately for fee renegotiation. 

  • Weekend rate changes must be discussed the following Monday—do not assume double rates. 

  • All issues must be reported to the bookings team immediately. 

3. Scope of Work & Boundaries

  • Accept only assignments aligned with your qualifications and the client’s funding (e.g., Access to Work). 

  • Do not accept personal, legal, or medical assignments unless explicitly authorized. 

  • Do not engage clients directly for additional work without written consent from InSignLanguage. 

4. Conduct & Reliability

  • Cancellations must only occur in genuine emergencies. 

  • Unexcused cancellations may result in blacklisting and a formal appeal process. 

  • Maintain punctuality, professionalism, and high linguistic and ethical standards at all times. 

5. Payment & Remuneration

  • Payment is made at agreed rates, typically aligned with NUBSLI guidance. 

  • Target payment window: within 30 days of assignment completion. 

  • Delays due to client payment issues will be communicated in advance. 

  • All invoicing must be sent to finance@insignlanguage.co.uk or the finance contact in your booking. 

6. Monitoring, Support & Development

  • Online sessions may be recorded for quality assurance and training, stored securely for up to 6 months. 

  • Real-time support and debriefing are available. 

  • Interpreters are expected to engage in CPD (Continuous Professional Development) activities, including training and mentorship.

7. Lone Working & Safety

  • Freelance interpreters working alone are considered lone workers

  • Immediate support is available from the bookings team for any safety or well-being concerns. 

  • Interpreters may withdraw from unsafe environments without penalty. 

8. Non-Circumvention & Resource Protection

  • Clients and third parties may not engage interpreters introduced by InSignLanguage for external work without written consent. 

  • All additional opportunities must be negotiated in good faith to acknowledge InSignLanguage’s role. 

9. Data Protection & Confidentiality

Interpreters must:  

  • Maintain strict confidentiality. 

  • Comply with UK GDPR and Data Protection Act requirements. 

  • Sign any required NDAs or confidentiality agreements. 

​10. ISO 18841:2018 Alignment 

InSignLanguage interpreters must also comply with the following ISO-based requirements: 

10.1 Assignment Conditions

Agree in advance on:  

  • Working hours, breaks, remuneration, equipment, safety, and documentation. 

  • Interpreting mode (consecutive/simultaneous), team composition, and technical setup. 

10.2 During Assignments 

  • Use direct speech unless inappropriate. 

  • Manage turn-taking and communication flow. 

  • Avoid personal opinions or emotional expression. 

  • Intervene only when necessary and identify yourself clearly when doing so. 

10.3 After Assignments 

  • Participate in debriefs and report critical incidents. 

  • Submit invoices and relevant documentation. 

  • Engage in self-care and report signs of fatigue or trauma. 

10.4 Qualifications & Competences 

Demonstrate:  

  • Proficiency in at least two languages (A and C). 

  • Linguistic, intercultural, interpersonal, technical, and domain-specific competence. 

  • Ability to use interpreting equipment and prepare using research tools. 

10.5 Self-Care

  • Avoid overwork and report unsafe or traumatic conditions. 

  • Seek support for vicarious trauma and maintain a personal wellness plan.
