Altan Maidrig
Director of Interpreters
With over 10 years of professional experience as a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter and a background in various roles supporting the Deaf community, I oversee the daily operations of our interpreting services. This includes managing interpreter bookings and schedules for both on-site and remote (video relay) assignments, leading our video interpreting platform, and providing strategic and pastoral support to our team of qualified interpreters. I am responsible for ensuring high standards of service delivery across our key client contracts, including with global organisations such as Apple and Nationwide. I also uphold quality assurance practices and foster effective communication and collaboration across all areas of service provision.
My personal journey deeply informs my professional approach. As a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) and native BSL user, I was raised in a Deaf household and immersed in the Deaf community from birth. I experienced first-hand the systemic communication barriers my parents faced and, from a young age, often had to interpret for them in situations no child should be responsible for—due to a lack of appropriate support and access to qualified interpreters. These early experiences gave me a deep understanding of the impact interpreting services can have, both positive and negative.
They also shaped my commitment to ensuring that Deaf people receive not only access, but high-quality, culturally competent interpreting support. I am driven by a personal standard: every service we deliver should be at a level I would feel confident and comfortable being provided to my own Deaf parents. That principle underpins the quality, care, and accountability I bring to every aspect of my work.
