InSignAI's accessible translations are not an alternative to translators and interpreters

Artificial Intelligence offers exciting possibilities, but human connection remains paramount. While avatar sign language has its place, it should complement, not replace, human interpreters and translators. This is especially true when considering alternatives to captions.

An Avatar as an Alternative to Captions, Not Human Interpreters. InSignAI is built on the core principle that human interaction is irreplaceable. The empathy and trust fostered by human communication are irreplaceable. We advocate for Deaf translators and RSLI interpreters as the primary choice whenever feasible. Complex situations like legal proceedings or medical diagnoses demand human expertise. When a human translation is possible, they must be prioritised.

InSignAI serves a different purpose: providing an alternative to captions where they fall short and filling the gaps where human translators are unavailable or less suitable. We create sign language translations that would otherwise not exist, expanding accessibility beyond the limitations of text-based solutions.

The sheer volume of content creation makes human translation alone insufficient. With new books, videos, and websites emerging at an astonishing rate, even a massive increase in the number of translators couldn't keep pace. This leaves a significant accessibility gap, particularly for those who struggle with or cannot use captions.

An Alternative to Captions for a Wider AudienceCaptions are not universally accessible. In the UK alone, this includes 87,000 British Sign Language users, 2 million people with low vision, 1.8 million adults with severe dyslexia, and over 800,000 adults with limited English proficiency. Traditionally, the choice has been "captions or nothing." InSignAI offers a crucial third option: AI-powered sign language translation as an alternative to captions, broadening access to information and entertainment for a wider audience. Our avatars, like Heather, provide a viable alternative to captions, making content accessible in a way that text simply cannot.
