West Midlands Trains Partners with InSignLanguage: Enhancing Accessibility for Deaf Passengers
West Midlands Trains (WMT) is proud to announce a partnership with InSignLanguage, a leading provider of deaf-accessible solutions. This collaboration introduces a groundbreaking digital wayfinding system designed to significantly improve the travel experience for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing passengers across the West Midlands.
The Importance of Accessibility in the West Midlands
West Midlands Trains operates services on the West Midlands franchise, connecting passengers between London and the East Midlands. An important fact is that West Midlands is home to one of the UK’s largest Deaf populations. With over 59,000 British Sign Language (BSL) users in Birmingham alone, thousands of Deaf passengers rely on West Midlands Trains every day to access work, education, and healthcare.
For some, it is just a daily commute. For others, it is a trip to see their loved ones or the beginning of a journey to somewhere new. To the staff—drivers, conductors, and station workers—it’s a mission: to keep the network moving, bridge distances, and ensure that every passenger arrives safely where they need to be.
Daily Operations and Challenges
Operating 1,300 services a day across 146 stations, WMT carries more than 200,000 passengers daily. With several stations located near schools and facilities for the hearing impaired, the company recognized the need to improve accessibility for one of the UK’s largest Deaf communities.

Commitment to Inclusion & Accessible Travel Across Every Station
There were challenges that were difficult to ignore. These included access to qualified BSL interpreters, leveraging existing digital signage, and implementing changes across different stations. The project began with detailed surveys of every station, capturing real-world images to guide a Deaf traveller through their journey.
Utilizing these visuals, InSignLanguage developed a new Travel Wayfinder system. This system translates written wayfinding instructions and delivers them in BSL by an AI 3D Avatar—accessible instantly through a mobile-friendly website.
Implementation of the Travel Wayfinder System
The full scope of implementation was completed in just six weeks across five stations: Telford Central, Smethwick Galton Bridge, Wellington, Shifnal, and Wolverhampton. Passengers can access custom, mobile-friendly websites by simply scanning a QR code on posters and digital screens.
Upon scanning, users can select their specific destination and receive real-life images of the station paired with directions translated and signed on-demand by InSign's AI 3D Avatar. This innovative approach provides a vital visual aid, bridging the communication gap often faced by Deaf passengers when navigating complex station environments.
Future Enhancements in Accessibility
West Midlands Trains is on track to further enhance the system by implementing real-time dynamic BSL translations for station announcements. This initiative continues their journey toward becoming a fully accessible train operator.
The Impact of the Partnership
This partnership has transformed accessibility for Deaf passengers, ensuring they can travel with greater confidence and independence. The work doesn’t stop here—by investing in innovative accessibility solutions, WMT has demonstrated their commitment to ensuring that the railways are for everyone—Hearing or Deaf, local or visitor, daily commuter or first-time traveller.
Conclusion: A Step Towards Barrier-Free Communication
This collaboration between West Midlands Trains and InSignLanguage is a significant step towards barrier-free communication. The aim is to create an inclusive environment where everyone can travel with ease.
