1. What this covers

This document covers recording, filming, streaming or broadcasting any part of a live interpreting assignment - in person or online, including recording made by the meeting platform.

It does not cover our BSL Video Presentation service, which is a different thing: an interpreter presenting your finished content to camera, produced to a quote. That has its own terms (ISL-LEG-B06).

2. The three rules

Tell us at booking. Every booking form asks whether any part will be recorded. Answer it accurately - it changes who we can allocate.

Saying yes is not permission. It is a request. Recording needs the interpreter's own agreement, and they may decline. Where a pair is booked, both must agree.

Permission is confirmed in writing before the assignment, and it states what is being recorded and what the recording is for.

3. The fee

A full day. £550.

A short or half day - anything less than a full day. £275.

This is charged in addition to the interpreting fee, and VAT applies at the prevailing rate. It is agreed with you before the assignment, like everything else in these terms, and it is not added afterwards.

The fee exists because a recording is a different product from a meeting. It persists, it can be replayed and paused and scrutinised, it can be shared beyond the room, and the interpreter's face and name are in it indefinitely. Interpreters are entitled to be paid for that, and the fee is passed to them.

4. Who can be recorded

Registered Sign Language Interpreters only. Recorded and broadcast work sits outside what we will allocate to a trainee.

That means One-to-One TSLI and the mixed RSLI and TSLI pair are not available for recorded work at all, in either mode. A trainee takes the lead for part of any co-worked assignment, so the exclusion applies to the mixed pair exactly as it does to a solo trainee booking.

If you book a trainee service and then tell us it will be recorded, we re-quote at the Registered rate. You take that price or cancel at no cost.

5. Platform recording and automatic transcription

Pressing record in Teams, Zoom or Google Meet is recording, and it is caught by everything in this document.

So is automatic transcription, and so are the AI meeting assistants that now join calls uninvited and produce notes, summaries or recordings afterwards. They capture the interpreter along with everyone else.

Leave all of it switched off unless recording has been agreed. If a recording starts without agreement, the interpreter will say so and ask for it to stop. If it does not stop, they may withdraw, and the assignment is charged in full.

6. What the interpreter is agreeing to

The interpreter appears in the recording. Their image, their name and their professional work are in it, and that is personal data as well as skilled labour.

Their consent covers the purpose agreed at the time and nothing wider. An interpreter who agreed to a training session being recorded for colleagues who missed it has not agreed to that footage appearing in an advertisement.

Consent can be withdrawn for future assignments. It is not retrospective - it does not require you to destroy a recording already lawfully made and used for the agreed purpose.

How we handle personal data is set out in the Privacy Notice (ISL-LEG-E01).

7. What you may do with the recording

Your licence covers the purpose agreed when the recording was authorised. Internal use, a record of the meeting, or making the session available to people who could not attend are the ordinary cases and are covered.

Commercial distribution must be agreed separately and is charged separately. That means advertising, resale, or using the footage to promote a paid product or service.

Broadcast - transmission to the public, or publication on a public channel - is a wider permission again, and must be identified before the assignment so we can allocate an interpreter who works to broadcast standards.

You may not edit the recording in a way that changes the meaning of what was interpreted, or that attributes to the interpreter something they did not say.

8. A recording of interpreting is not a translation

Interpreting is live and one-pass. Translation is drafted, revised and checked. Recording a live interpretation does not turn it into a translation, and it does not acquire the assurances a translation carries.

There is no drafting cycle, no second qualified linguist revising the work before delivery, and no certificate of accuracy. If you need a certified, sworn or attested translation, this will not meet it.

If what you actually want is finished BSL content produced from settled source material, that is our BSL Video Presentation service (ISL-LEG-B06), and it is built for the purpose.

9. Confidentiality

Recording does not loosen confidentiality. Interpreters remain bound by the NRCPD code of conduct, and a recording of a confidential assignment is still confidential.

Where the assignment involves a third party's personal data - a patient, a service user, a child - obtaining their consent to be recorded is yours to manage, not ours. The interpreter's agreement covers the interpreter only.
