Dialogue Cafe is an inclusive social enterprise that creates meaningful connections through coffee, community, and communication. Our barista team includes hearing, Deaf and Hard of Hearing staff. We actively promote Deaf awareness, use British Sign Language (BSL), and deliver inclusive customer experiences.
Job Description
We are looking for Deaf & Hard of Hearing people to join our team. You will prepare drinks, deliver excellent customer service, and support an inclusive Cafe environment.
Applicants must:
• Live in the London Borough of Newham
• Be currently unemployed (economically inactive)
Full training and workplace support will be provided.
ACCESS & INCLUSION
• Open to Deaf & Hard of Hearing applicants
• Communication via BSL, written methods, visual systems, interpreters, and VRS
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare coffee, tea, cold drinks
• Serve pastries and food items
• Deliver inclusive customer service and support BSL ordering experiences
• Operate POS systems and handle cash
• Open and close the Cafe
• Maintain cleanliness of Cafe, equipment, and storage areas
• Manage stock levels, expiry checks, and restocking
• Demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, and a positive attitude while working independently and as part of a team.
WORKING HOURS
• Rota-based shifts
• Minimum 16 hours per week
• Typical shift length: approximately 6 hours
• Weekend availability required when needed
• Flexibility for events, pop-ups, graduations, and catering
REPORTING & DEVELOPMENT
• Reports to Operations Lead / Manager
• Performance reviews at 1, 3, and 6 months
• Progression opportunities based on performance
HEALTH & SAFETY
• Follow health & safety procedures
• Maintain food hygiene standards

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
• Previous barista experience is preferred but not essential
• Strong customer service skills
• Willingness to learn and work in a busy environment
• Food Hygiene Level 3 certificate preferred but not essential (training can be supported)
