Service Description

A Registered interpreter leading and a trainee alongside, for your weekend event - the continuity of two interpreters for less than the cost of two Registered ones. We name both before we confirm, and there is nothing to pay until it has been delivered. Two interpreters working as a pair online, weekends between 09:00 and 17:00: one Registered Sign Language Interpreter leading, one Trainee Sign Language Interpreter alongside them. WEEKEND EVENTS, WITHIN REACH Community gatherings and members' days, faith events, training weekends, club and society AGMs, cultural and sports events, conferences on familiar ground. Weekend events are often exactly the right setting for a mentored pair: a known subject, a friendly room, and a full day of programme that needs two interpreters to cover properly. WORKING TO A STANDARD, NOT JUST A CONNECTION Every session is delivered remotely by interpreters working to our own standards and to ASLI's best-practice guidance for video interpreting: preparation before the day, what the interpreter must be able to see and hear, pacing and turn-taking, rest breaks, and when a second interpreter is required. Remote is not a lighter version of the work. That guidance exists precisely because a video link takes something away, and the working practices are what put it back. CONFIRMED BY A PERSON, NOT A SCREEN Our interpreters are on shift during weekday hours. Weekends are sourced individually, so this is a request rather than an instant booking - and that is deliberate. We find both interpreters, they accept the work, and then we confirm to you. You will never hold a confirmation for a weekend nobody has agreed to cover. Book at least 14 days ahead. A pair free the same weekend is the scarcest booking there is, and a fortnight is what makes it findable. If your date is sooner, ask anyway. You are not charged until the service has been delivered. You can pay in advance if you prefer. Cancel or reschedule free of charge up to seven days before the start. THE PAIR THAT TEACHES Co-working is how interpreting is delivered for anything that is not a one-to-one conversation. This version pairs a Registered interpreter with a trainee, so your event gets the continuity and accuracy control of two interpreters at a lower cost - and a trainee builds supervised hours under someone experienced. It is the oldest way the profession has grown, and online is where it works best. With no travel in the way, the right mentor can be paired with the right trainee wherever either of them lives - and taking travel out is a large part of why a weekend pair is bookable at all. WHY TWO One interpreter can sustain a conversation between two people. Beyond that - a programme, several speakers, an audience - the interpreting has to run without a break in it. Accuracy is known to fall away after around thirty minutes of continuous work, and a screen brings that on sooner. A pair holds the quality steady across the whole day. HOW THE PAIR WORKS The Registered interpreter leads and carries responsibility for the assignment. Working as co-interpreters, they switch lead roles every 15 to 20 minutes, or whenever a natural transition point arises. Even when not actively signing, the support interpreter is fully engaged - tracking names and figures, feeding terminology, correcting in real time. Both are on the call throughout, so the handover is seamless and your programme does not stop for it. If your event turns out to need two Registered interpreters, we will say so and re-quote. You never have to make that judgement yourself. WHY ORGANISATIONS BOOK THIS Clubs, charities, faith groups and event organisers all have duties under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments so that Deaf people are not put at a disadvantage. Booking registered interpreters is how that is met - and it leaves a record. THE SAME WORK, WITHOUT THE TRAVEL The fee matches the equivalent in-person weekend service, because the interpreting is the same demanding work. What you save is the travel for two people. WHAT IS INCLUDED Both interpreters for the full booked period, their preparation, and their rest breaks. We name both to you before the day and tell you which is the trainee. Both are on the NRCPD register, bound by its code of conduct including confidentiality, and carry their own indemnity insurance. PRICE Prices cover both interpreters and include VAT. A full day is six hours of interpreting; beyond six hours the rate is £127.50 an hour for the Registered interpreter and £108.50 for the trainee. This service is not available for recorded or broadcast work - that needs two Registered interpreters.
