Deaf Awareness Seminar — Online
Sixty minutes at lunchtime, led by a Deaf trainer, for your whole team
Service Description
Sixty minutes, at lunchtime, that change how your team works with Deaf colleagues and Deaf customers. Led by a Deaf trainer, interpreted throughout, and built around the work your people actually do. WHY A DEAF TRAINER Deaf awareness taught by a hearing trainer is a description of something. Taught by a Deaf professional, it is the thing itself - the room hears what actually happens at the till, in the team meeting, on the ward, from someone it happened to. A registered interpreter works alongside them, so nothing is lost in either direction and your team sees BSL in use from the first minute. WHAT THE HOUR COVERS Terminology people are afraid of getting wrong - Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing - settled in five minutes. Working with an interpreter: where to look, who to speak to, and what changes when you get it right. Real accounts of communication breaking down in offices, shops and schools - and why lipreading is not the answer most people assume it is. The practical fixes: lighting and sightlines, rephrasing instead of shouting, the notes app already in your pocket, live captions, and the low-tech backup that never fails. Why "it doesn't matter" and "I'll tell you later" do more damage than everything else on this list. A BSL and fingerspelling taster, taught in BSL, including the signs your own team asks for. Open questions, and a handout to keep. WHO IT IS FOR Teams of up to twelve. Customer-facing staff, managers who line-manage a Deaf employee, teaching and clinical teams, HR and recruitment - and anyone who has been meaning to ask a question for years and has never had a safe place to ask it. LUNCHTIME, ON PURPOSE Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, 12:00 to 13:00. One hour. No travel, no cover to arrange, nobody's afternoon lost. We send a Microsoft Teams invitation once you have booked. £500, INCLUDING VAT, AND CONFIRMED WHEN YOU BOOK £500 for the session, whether four people attend or twelve. Prices include VAT. Your date is held the moment you book it - not a request under consideration. The same hour, with the same Deaf trainer and the same interpreter, costs £800 in your building. Online you are not paying for two people to travel to you, or for a room to be set up around them. The saving is real, and none of it comes out of the session. WHY ORGANISATIONS BOOK IT The Equality Act 2010 puts a duty on employers and service providers to make reasonable adjustments. Adjustments only work when the people delivering them understand why they exist. This is the least expensive hour you will spend on that duty, and it leaves a record. Deaf awareness training builds understanding and confidence. It does not qualify anyone as an interpreter or as a signer, and we will not tell you that it does. NOT QUITE THIS? If the room matters - if you want the fingerspelling worked in pairs, or a half day or full day built around your organisation - see Deaf Awareness Seminar - Face to Face. For more than twelve people, contact us and we will build it around you.

Tell us beforehand if you need more and we will requote or split the group - going over it changes the session. 2. CONFIRMING AND PAYING 2.1 Your booking is confirmed when you make it. Payment is taken at the same time. 2.2 The fee is £500 including VAT for the session, whatever the number of participants up to 12. A VAT invoice follows. 2.3 Book at least 14 days ahead. MATERIALS AND OUTCOMES 7.1 We keep ownership of our training materials. Your participants may use them internally for their own learning; they may not sell them, pass them on, or deliver them as their own training. 7.2 Deaf awareness training builds understanding and confidence. It does not qualify anyone as an interpreter or as a signer. Our Deaf Awareness Training Terms and our Terms and Conditions of Service govern; where this differs, they apply. bookings@insignlanguage.co.uk
