From Interpreting to Empowerment: Supporting Deaf Artists in Kenya
How creativity, community and a new initiative are helping create opportunities for Deaf people in Kenya.

Sometimes the most meaningful ideas start small.
For two of our interpreters, a love of creativity has developed into something with a much bigger purpose: helping Deaf people in Kenya access opportunities, develop sustainable livelihoods and build greater independence.
They are now in the process of setting up a new charitable initiative in Kenya, built around a goal that is very close to our hearts at InSignLanguage: creating opportunities for Deaf people and helping remove the barriers that can stand in the way of employment.
Art That Makes a Difference
As part of this journey, they have created Keith & Mumpkin Studio, where they sell their own original artwork.
What makes the studio particularly special is what happens beyond the paintings themselves.
Profits from their hand-painted pieces are being used to support Deaf artists in Kenya, helping to provide the tools and materials they need to create and sell their own arts and crafts.
The idea behind the studio actually began quite unexpectedly.
They never originally intended to sell their paintings and had even thrown some away because they did not believe anyone would want them. After encouragement from their son, who became their unofficial "agent", their artwork eventually made its way into an art café gallery and then online.
What started with a few paintings now has the potential to become something much bigger.
Supporting Skills, Not Just Giving Support
For us, one of the most important aspects of this initiative is its focus on creating opportunities.
Employment and meaningful work can provide much more than an income. They can bring independence, confidence, choice and the opportunity to build a sustainable future.
The aim is to support Deaf people in Kenya to use and develop their own skills, including creative skills, to build opportunities for themselves.
Rather than simply providing short-term support, the bigger ambition is to help create pathways towards skills, enterprise and sustainable employment.
Creating Opportunities Through Creativity
The potential of a project like this goes beyond selling individual pieces of artwork.
Access to the right materials, tools and opportunities can help someone turn an existing talent into something that generates an income.
A person who can paint, sew, make jewellery, create crafts or produce other handmade items may already have the beginnings of a small business. Sometimes what is missing is the opportunity and resources to take that next step.
That is what makes this project exciting.
It is about recognising ability and potential, and helping create an environment where Deaf people are able to use those skills.
🎨 ART WITH A PURPOSE Every purchase from Keith & Mumpkin Studio helps support the growing project in Kenya. And right now, there is a sale on, making it a particularly good time to discover the artwork.
Why Deaf Employment Matters
At InSignLanguage, we know that accessibility is not simply about being present. It is about having an equal opportunity to contribute, develop and succeed.
Communication barriers can create obstacles throughout working life, from accessing training and attending an interview to communicating confidently with colleagues.
But being Deaf should never mean that someone's skills, creativity or ambitions are overlooked.
Creating genuinely inclusive employment means looking at what someone can do, then making sure unnecessary barriers do not prevent them from doing it.
That same principle sits at the heart of this developing project in Kenya.

A Project That Is Just Beginning
The initiative in Kenya is still developing, and there is much more to come.
But every project has to begin somewhere.
In this case, it begins with creativity, paintings, people willing to share their skills and a belief that Deaf people should have the opportunity to build livelihoods on their own terms.
As the project develops, we hope to be able to share much more about the people involved, the work being created and the difference these opportunities can make.
For now, one very simple way to support the journey is to discover the artwork being sold through Keith & Mumpkin Studio.
