Celebrating 20 Years of Zebra Access: A Day of Connection and Community

Updated: Oct 6

Zebra Access celebrated their 20th anniversary on the 13th of September in Wolverhampton which is a remarkable milestone for the organisation that has worked tirelessly to support and empower the deaf community.

For InSignLanguage it was an experience of privilege and responsibility to partake on this occasion. In the spirit of celebration and collaboration, our colleagues Ismael, Gloria, Fateha, Deeshi and Agnes joined the festivities and strengthen our connections with community, showcase our services and contribute to an event that carries a significant meaning for so many.

The venue was brimming with positive energies and excitement from the attendees and organisers. There were multitude of activities, stalls, games which meant everyone was included uniquely with activities for children, information for families, and a welcoming presence from organisations across the sector. Among these, InSignLanguage’s stall stood ready, carefully curated with banners, structured displays, and materials designed to inform and engage with the audience. Our branded merchandise offered a small gesture of hospitality, while thoughtfully designed flyers, complete with QR codes, made it very simple for visitors to connect with our services.

One of the most significant aspects of our presence was the opportunity to record a podcast episode with Nikki Stratton, a well-known and respected figure in the deaf community. This conversation, set against the vibrant backdrop of the event, captured both the celebratory spirit of the day and the deeper issues at the heart of our shared mission. The podcast, now in its final stages of editing, will soon be published and promises to further amplify InSignLanguage’s visibility and voice within the community.

Overcoming obstacles through clear communication and collaboration, the team joined their efforts and attention to amplify InSignLanguage's presence and visibility. It resulted in fruitful outcome of well engaged visitors, peers and successfully captured the essence of InSignLanguage's presence in such a notable event. Every conversation, every shared moment, was carefully documented to ensure that no opportunity for future collaboration is lost.

For our team, the event was not only about participation but also about recognition. The invitation to share in Zebra Access’s anniversary served as a meaningful affirmation of InSignLanguage’s role within the wider network of organisations dedicated to supporting and empowering the deaf community.

In conclusion and reflection, the 20th anniversary of Zebra Access was more than a celebration—it was a reminder of the importance of community, partnership, and vision. For InSignLanguage, it marked an opportunity to contribute meaningfully, to grow connections, and to carry forward the lessons learned into future events and strategies.
